Their diet plays a crucial ecological role: by keeping sea urchin populations in check, sea otters help maintain healthy kelp forests, which are vital marine habitats. Known locally as "Pier’s End," this site offers a venue experience unlike any other, situated at the terminus of a 700-foot-long wooden pier extending directly over the waters of Tillamook Bay. Built in 1936, the boathouse served as a critical rescue station for the North Coast for over 30 years. She is an otter alum from CSU Monterey Bay, and volunteered with sea and river otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. She’s conducted marine science research on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and worked for Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program at the Ritz Carlton Reserve in Puerto Rico. Since moving to the South Coast 6 years ago, Kyle has worked with local non-profit groups to successfully implement habitat restoration projects focused on coho salmon and oak woodlands. Guided by a marine biologist and expert naturalist you’ll learn to identify a variety of seaweed species and discover the intricate web of life that thrives between the tides. We’ll be introduced to intertidal ecology and oceanography of the Oregon Coast, specifically how they pertain to seaweeds and kelps. We will speak about how they can and have been used in culinary and healing treatments for centuries (though not foraging because we are out of season). It is truly a spectacular place to camp and call home for a few days. The ocean is a 15 minute walk, mostly through the forest, and there are various creeks to enjoy on and around the property. This space offers itself for deep nourishment and calm. You will likely go home having the land and its inhabitants wedged deeply into your heart. We will be the only group on site and set up our tents among the trees and share time together in our outdoor kitchen and around the fire pit. He has 25 years of experience working with cartilaginous and bony fish. He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and his research has garnered more than $13 million in external grant funding. James has appeared on numerous local and national television shows including the Today Show, Ocean Mysteries, the BBC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic. From South Africa to Australia to California, using state of the art technology, he electronically tags animals to gain insights into their lives when we aren’t there to observe them. At OSU, Taylor studies the sharks off our coasts and works with local communities to better understand sharks in Oregon. Her research generally focuses on how marine organisms respond to biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) environmental variables. Alex use this information to contextualize and predict behavior, movement patterns, and survival, mostly exploring this topic in threatened marine fishes. He has 25 years of experience working with cartilaginous and bony fish. He has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and his research has garnered more than $13 million in external grant funding. James has appeared on numerous local and national television shows including the Today Show, Ocean Mysteries, the BBC, Discovery Channel, and National Geographic.
