See what people are saying...
“Alanna led our large group seaweed foraging near Newport. She was patient, easy to understand, and gave lots of harvesting tips. We weren't rushed and she answered everyones questions. She shared recipes after we foraged some seaweed. It was fun and informative.” - Donna F.
Alanna is a great teacher and guide. We went bay clamming with a small group in Garibaldi and learned about harvesting bay clams and seaweed along with some other fun teachings sprinkled in. Her passion is contagious and sparks curiosity! It was a great way to spend the day and learn, AND to top it off we all got to take our harvest home and eat it - I can’t stop talking about how fun it was with my friends and family. I can’t wait to sign up for more adventures with Shifting Tides and I highly recommend them!
“I had a wonderful time on Alanna's women's fishing trip! She was extremely organized, communicative and did an amazing job making sure everyone was comfortable and supported. We caught lots of fish and had a wonderful time. I can't wait to join more of her trips!” - Molly H.
“As two public school teachers, my boyfriend and I don’t say lightly that Alanna is an INCREDIBLY skilled and generous educator with an infectious joy for the knowledge she has to share. If you’ve been hesitating to book a spot in one of her workshops at all, do it do it do it!!! We joined a Springtime intertidal seaweed foraging class and it was such a lovely and enriching experience. We will definitely be returning for more of Alanna’s workshop offerings. In the meantime, we’re so enjoying our supply of dried Oregon coast wakame!” - Julie D.
“This was an awesome experience to share with my girlfriend. Before the class I had never so much as heard of wakame. By the end we were prepared and confident to use the seaweed as a key ingredient that we had just harvested. Which led to making this exceptionally delish poké bowl recipe for dinner that same day. Harvesting from nature can be really intimidating. This class really gave us confidence that we may never have earned by trying to learn on our own. We were also equipped with how to do it ethically and legally which was huge. Huge thanks to Shifting Tides!” - Ammon B.
“I took a tidepooling class with Shifting Tides and it was an incredible experience! Alanna is a great, engaging teacher. Her passion for marine life comes through in her teaching and is infectious. We saw lots of cool creatures, and Alanna taught us so much about them and the intertidal environment we were in. Can't recommend Shifting Tides enough and hope to take another class some day!” - Jaye Q.
“Alanna and her brother (Picnic Eats) put on a very special crabbing and lunch event for my bachelorette weekend. They surprised and delighted us all day, and we had such a blast! I will absolutely be planning more events with them!!” - Abby K.
“Wow. Just Wow. I feel so fortunate to have signed up for an overnight camp out with Alanna that included a hands-on lesson in mussel harvesting....and cooking! Alanna's passion for coastal ecosystems, depth of knowledge, and relatable stories makes her a natural teacher. Chef Gabe was fantastic, sharing techniques and ideas for foraged seafood preparations. I recommend a Shifting Tide experience for anyone who wants a memorable Oregon Coast experience, or just wants to learn more about sea creatures and macro algae, aka seaweed. ” - Lydia L.
