Gather in the Tillamook Bay to learn all about clams!

You will hear what makes this habitat so unique and special to various clam species that inhabit it. We’ll be focused on gathering cockle clams, and it’s asked that you bring your own rake to class. More info sent upon sign up!

Bay Clamming Workshop: Guided Exploration of Tillamook Bay’s Tide Flats

Discover the bounty of Oregon’s estuaries in this guided bay clamming workshop that takes you onto the productive tide flats of the Pacific Northwest. Led by marine biologist and educator Alanna Kieffer, this immersive experience introduces attendees to cockle clams, one of the most accessible and delicious clams found in our coastal waters.

We’ll begin with an introduction to estuarine ecology, learning how the intersection of freshwater and saltwater creates a nutrient-rich habitat for shellfish. During a guided walk across the intertidal flats, you’ll be introduced to the unique biology of clams and their role in filtering the bay’s water.

The workshop emphasizes sustainable harvesting techniques, showing you how to use a clam rake effectively while minimizing your footprint on the delicate bay floor. You’ll also navigate the practicalities of seasonal regulations, size limits, and ethical guidelines for gathering shellfish responsibly along Oregon’s shoreline.

Why Tillamook Bay is the Ultimate Foraging Classroom

Tillamook Bay is the second largest bay in Oregon, offering an incredible living classroom for guided shellfish and foraging experiences. With its expansive eelgrass beds and diverse sediment types, the bay supports a massive population of diverse clam species.

Whether you’re joining for the first time or returning for another season, these workshops are designed to shift your perspective on Oregon’s muddy "flats" and reveal the incredible life hidden just out of sight. You’ll gain a new appreciation for the bay’s muck and the chance to see the shoreline in a whole new light.

Bay clamming is a year-round opportunity, but success depends entirely on mastering the tidal cycle. This is your chance to learn about these nutrient-dense bivalves and the specialized skills needed to find them. We will also discuss and demonstrate how to properly purge, clean, and cook your catch.
