Seaweed Foraging

Seaweed Foraging

Garibaldi, OR - June 12, 8am-11pm

Seaweed Foraging Workshop: Guided Exploration of Oregon’s Tidepools
Discover the magic of Oregon’s coastline in this guided seaweed foraging workshop that takes you deep into the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s intertidal ecosystems. Led by seaweeds #1 fan, Alanna Kieffer, this immersive experience introduces participants to the incredible diversity of native seaweeds that thrive along Oregon’s rocky shores.

We’ll begin with an introduction to tidepool ecology—learning about tides, oceanography, and the unique marine habitats that support more kelp species here than anywhere else on Earth. During a guided walk from the highest to lowest tide points accessible, you’ll practice identifying a handful of common Oregon seaweed species depending on the season and site conditions. Discover their culinary uses and and understand how they contribute to healthy marine systems.

The workshop emphasizes sustainable foraging techniques, showing you how to harvest responsibly and minimize ecological impact. You’ll also explore seasonal harvesting regulations and ethical guidelines for collecting along Oregon’s coast.

Back on shore, participants will learn methods for processing and preserving wild seaweeds, including drying, pickling, and grinding. Samples of freshly made seaweed seasoning and pickled seaweeds will be provided for tasting, offering a sensory connection to the ocean’s flavor.

Each session concludes with a community discussion around the cultural, ecological, and culinary significance of seaweed in Oregon’s coastal traditions. Participants leave not only with their own harvested seaweed but with new confidence to explore tidepools mindfully and a deeper appreciation for the Pacific’s abundant ecosystems.

Why Oregon is the Ultimate Seaweed Classroom
Oregon’s coastline is home to one of the most biodiverse intertidal ecosystems on Earth, offering an unparalleled living classroom for guided tidepool and foraging experiences. These workshops are more than field trips. but a chance to to learn how ecology, food, and community intertwine, and to bring a piece of the Pacific home in a sustainable way.

Whether you’re joining for the first time or returning for another season, each workshop offers a unique window into Oregon’s coastal ecosystems, and the chance to see the seaweed-covered shoreline in a whole new light.

The collection of living seaweeds in Oregon only runs from March 1 - June 15th. Now is your chance to learn about these wildly important and nutrient dense sea vegetables. These algae can be eaten fresh, dried or pickled for later use which we’ll discuss in great depth.

  • This workshop will be held near Garibaldi, OR. An exact address will be sent upon registration.

  • Foraging requires some significant walking including some potentially difficult terrain, including slippery and unstable rocks. Please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes, rainboots, or other hiking footwear). Whatever you don't mind getting wet that will also keep your feet stable. For your own safety and comfort, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend.

  • No license is needed to harvest seaweed in Oregon as long as you are within the season (March 1 - June 15).

  • Be prepared for any weather! For seaweed foraging you’ll need a pair of scissors or a knife, and a gallon size bag or bucket. Don’t forget a cooler with ice to carry your haul home.

Please do NOT bring dogs. I love the furry friends but this is a hands on group activity and they can make it a little challenging for the group overall. Thank you!

  • Cancellations made prior to 10 days from the time of the event will get a full refund (minus processing fees) or be rescheduled. Within 10 days of the workshop time, I will do my best to schedule someone but if I cannot fill the spot, no refund will be available.

  • The coast is often unpredictable. Events will happen rain or shine. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather. If ocean conditions are unsafe on the day of the event, we will do what we can to educate and have a full lesson while keeping everyone safe.
