This workshop will introduce students to beach front intertidal environment of the Oregon Coast. We will be digging Razor Clams on the beach front in Seaside, OR. Students will learn about the different environments of various clam species as well as the clamming industry along the Oregon Coast.

Gather in Garibaldi to learn about the ecology and oceanography of the Tillamook Bay. We will discuss the conditions that allow clams to inhabit this area as well as conditions that allow us to forage. Pacific Dulse is a regenerative, nutrient-rich crop native to Oregon. Oregon Seaweed is growing dulse in tanks on land in Garibaldi, OR. Come learn about the industry of seaweed farming, and the environmental benefits, with Alanna who has been farming seaweed for 2+ years. Students will be able to harvest their own seaweed to take home.

Bringing the ocean to the forest, well, because our forests don’t simply end at the coastline, but continue on into the sea in the form of kelps and seaweed! This workshop is an introduction to oceanography, coastal ecology, including the edible shellfish and seaweeds that line our shores from coast based marine biologist and seaweed farmer, Alanna Kieffer of Shifting Tides. We will discuss the abundance, diversity, safety, and seasonality of sea vegetables and shellfish, with a seaweed touch tank and identification workshop!

  • Cancellations made prior to 10 days from the time of the event will get a full refund (minus processing fees) or be rescheduled. Within 10 days of the workshop time, I will do my best to schedule someone but if I cannot fill the spot, no refund will be available.

  • PLEASE READ!! All students are required to sign a liability waiver, prior to class. Please download waiver HERE, sign, and upload when you register.

  • My typical range is Seaside, Oregon to Garibaldi, Oregon though sometimes I make special trips to Newport or locations further south. I can sometimes travel upon request.

  • Rough locations are posted in the workshop description. The exact locations of workshops will be sent to students upon registration. Based on weather and conditions, exact locations are sometimes decided or close to scheduled times. These changes are easier to make via emails to students rather than directly on the site.

  • We love a furry friend, but for the sake of this being a group experience in semi rough terrain with some amount of gear, please leave the dogs at home.

  • Terrain varies depending on the experience. Rocky intertidal foraging (mussels and seaweed) are often in areas with big boulders and sometimes require walking on very unstable terrain. Clamming occurs in mud flats where lose sand can be a little unstable and “sinky”. Crabbing occurs on piers, so it is a bit more stable but sometimes slippery (with handrails).

  • For sure! Totally up to you on their ability to go through this terrain. I may start doing classes targeted at children, if that’s something you want please let me know in an email and I’ll be sure to prioritize it!

  • Private workshop prices totally depend on exactly what you’re looking for. I’ll work with you to scheme up your dream experience while working with your budget. Timing is often dependent on the tide, often making this our most limiting factor in planning.

  • My most available days for private workshops are weekdays. Weekends are often taken up by group classes.

  • Tidepooling

    This workshop will immerse students in the rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides, ocean conditions, and safety and etiquette on the rocks. Dive into details on specific organisms and species interactions that make up the general ecology of our intertidal ecosystems. Spend time exploring the nooks and crannies of the rocky shores looking for critters of all sizes.

  • Mussel Foraging

    Come foraging for mussels! This workshop will introduce students to the diverse and abundant rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides, ocean conditions, as well as safety and etiquette on the rocks. There will be a focus on foraging mussels and other edibles including barnacles, and seaweed (seaweed is dependent on the season, ONLY March-June 15).

  • Bay Clamming

    Gather in Garibaldi to learn about the ecology and oceanography of the Tillamook Bay. We will discuss the conditions that allow multiple clam species to inhabit the bay as well as conditions that allow us to forage. Learn sustainable and proper harvest techniques, preparation and storage of raking for cockle clams.

  • Seaweed ID

    Oregon’s rocky shores are covered in a diverse array of seaweeds. Look into the intricate and distinctive patterns that make up each group. Learn how seaweed is classified as well as how to identify a few local species. Compare sea vegetables with tastings on the beach.

  • Crabbing

    Spend a day along the shores of the Tillamook Bay. Oregon is home to one of the most beloved shellfish worldwide, the Dungeness Crab! Join to learn the ins and outs of crabbing while hearing about the crabbing industry as a whole and how it shapes Oregon's coastal economy. You will learn about different crabbing techniques as well as how to identify different crabs species and legal size and sex limits.

  • Razor Clamming

    This workshop includes Razor Clamming in Oregon. Students will be introduced to intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides, ocean conditions, and safety. Learn how to identify clam holes and how to properly dig for eazors.
