Tidepool Exploration

This workshop will immerse students in the rocky intertidal ecosystems of the Oregon Coast. We will discuss tides, ocean conditions, and safety and etiquette on the rocks. Dive into details on specific organisms and species interactions that make up the general ecology of our intertidal ecosystems. Spend time exploring the nooks and crannies of the rocky shores looking for critters of all sizes. We’ll be meeting near Cannon Beach, OR.
Oregon’s large tidal exchange provides a dynamic and unique look into a world beyond our own. Low tide offers a rare glimpse into the lives of creatures usually hidden beneath the waves. Explore the shores, stepping into the unique underwater universe of our rocky shores, and find green and pink anemones, vibrant sea stars, shore crabs, hermit crabs,iridescent sea slugs, prehistoric chitons, tide-pool fish, and so much more!Observing this vibrant ecosystem up close provides a fascinating look at the resilience and diversity of coastal marine life.
Meet Your Guide — Mylasia Miklas
Mylasia is an experienced tidepooler and science educator hailing from the gulf coast of Texas. After graduating from Texas A&M University at Galveston with a degree in marine biology, she made the move to Astoria, Oregon, where she worked as a Fisheries Observer with the West Coast Groundfish Program. After her first tidepooling expedition to Haystack Rock, she was hooked! Through tidepooling, Mylasia discovered her passion for science communication. She loves getting to help people build connections to the rocky intertidal and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. With five years of experience in environmental education, she has served as a Tidepool Ambassador at Cape Falcon Marine Reserve and as a Rocky Shore Interpreter with the Haystack Rock Awareness Program. When she isn’t tidepooling, you can find her practicing photography, crocheting, or hanging with her cat.

This workshop will be held near Cannon Beach, Oregon. An exact location will be sent upon booking.

Tide pooling may require some significant walking through some potentially difficult terrain, including slippery and unstable rocks. Please wear appropriate footgear (e.g. tennis shoes, rainboots, or other hiking footwear). Whatever you don't mind getting wet that will also keep your feet stable. For your own safety and comfort, do not wear flipflops or sandals. Do keep in mind your feet are likely to be in the water at some point, so rainboots are what I would strongly recommend.

Cancellations made prior to 10 days from the time of the event will get a full refund (minus processing fees) or be rescheduled. Within 10 days of the workshop time, I will do my best to schedule someone but if I cannot fill the spot, no refund will be available.

The Oregon coast is often unpredictable. Events will happen rain or shine. Please be prepared for any and all types of weather. If ocean conditions are unsafe on the day of the event, we will do what we can to educate and have a full lesson while keeping everyone safe.

Come prepared for any and all types of weather. Bring any snacks, water, medications, and sunscreen you may want during the event.
Please do NOT bring dogs. I love the furry friends, but this is an interactive and physically demanding workshop and they can make it a bit challenging for participants.
